contribute to individuals experiencing depression seeing themselves, the world and the future
more negatively than other people. As explained in section 15.7 of Chapter 15 of your textbook,
overgeneralization is one such thinking error, defined as the "tendency to think that an upsetting
event applies to other, unrelated situations. Find an example of overgeneralization by Janet in the case study and explain how her thinking fits with the concept of this thinking error. 2) Imagine that you are a cognitive-behaviour therapist providing Janet with therapy using rational-
emotive behavior therapy (REBT). Review the section on rational-emotive therapy in section 15.7
of Chapter 15 in your textbook to be sure you understand the key concepts in this approach to
therapy. As stated in your textbook, REBT focuses on identifying and challenging irrational beliefs
about activating experiences that result in negative emotional consequences. Find an exam ple of
an action or statement by Janet in the case study that suggests she has interpreted activating
experiences in accordance with the following irrational beliefs (see a and b below; one example per belief). Be sure to explain how Janet’s thoughts and/or actions suggest that she holds these
irrational beliefs. 3) I must be loved and approved by almost every significant person in my life or it’s awful and
I’m worthless b) It is easier to avoid difficulties and responsibilities than to face them 3) Janet initially sought from a mental-health centre because her 5-year-old son Adam was
having sleep difficulties, refusing to go to bed at his bedtime and waking up several times each
night. She described how he would come downstairs, and after struggling to get him to go back
to bed, she would give in and let him sleep in her room. The therapist recommended that Janet
respond differently when Adam came downstairs in the future, by offering him a drink, then
taking him back to his room, tucking him into bed and leavingthe room immediately. a) which of the six operantconditioning principles listed in section 15.5 of Chapter 15 of your textbook (pp. 491-492) best accounts for how Janet’s response to Adam prior to therapy (letting him sleep in her bed) contributed to the persistence of Adam’s sleep problems?
Explain why this may be the case. b) Which of the six operantconditioning principles listed in section 15.5 of Chapter 15 of your
textbook (pp. 491-492) best accounts for Adam sleeping through the night without
interruption 10 days after Janet began using the procedure recommended by the therapist? Explain why this may be the case. 4) Imagine that you are treating Janet with client-centred therapy, which is explained in section 15.6 of
Chapter 15 in your textbook, and in Lecture 1 of Unit 11 in SAKAI. Client-centred therapists show
their client unconditional positive regard by accepting them as a person without judgment. They also
use a technique that your textbook calls reflection, and what Carl Rogers calls active listening (see
Lecture 1 of Unit 11). This involves rephrasing. paraphrasing. or summ arizing the thoughts and
